Seen more facebook statuses moaning about people not celebraring it, than I've seen people complain about it or say we shouldn't.
I'm in favour of it as a national holiday cos I like the idea of not going to work to get pissed instead

As the article says we don't celebrate because he is not "our" saint, he's foreign, belongs to several states, we would be better off with someone from these shores, it's kind daft really.

Saul, are you just bitter that the rest of the world hates the English? The English don't get this sort of love...

Only people in insignificant countries and their inadequate populace need to celebrate national days.

"in England before King Edward the Confesser named St George as Miltary patron of The Knights of the Guarter and adopted The Georges Cross as the Banner of the English Army the Anglo Saxon people of England would celebrate today as the Feast of the Northern European folk hero Sigurd who amongst his many great deeds slayed a mighty Dragon, a feat later attributed to George and the customs celebrated around the English Kingdom in this day thereafter changed from The Feasts of Sigurd to St Gorges Day, The true flag of the English people was The White Dragon (on s red background) and not the St Georges cross, another Dragon that seems to have been slain in history, St George was actually born in Libya and never even visited our shores, killed lots of people in the name of Christianity and is the Patron saint of a dozen countries, if you do have Christian sympathies then the original Saint of England was St Edmund who actually lived here, (a hermit in the woods who healed many people and animals) .......... all this however does not take away from the fact that today for whatever reason is a day were we can celebrate being English, our Culture, its History and our wonderful people, I invoke the spirit of The White Dragon and raise my Tankard to the sound of Morris Dancing bells and thank my Ancestors that I was born upon the blessed land!"

"And isn't the house you were born in the most interesting house in the world to you?..that you want to know how your father did, and his father.
well, there are more ways than one of getting close to your ancestors - follow the old road, and as you walk, think of them and the old England.
they climbed the same hills just as you did - they sweated and paused for breath just as you did today. And when you see the blue bells and the spring, the wild thyme, the broom and the heather, you're only seeing what their eyes saw, and fording the same rivers, the same birds are singing.
and when you lie flat on your back and rest, and watch the clouds sailing, as I often do, you're so close to those other people, that you can hear the thrumming of the hooves of their horses and the sound of the wheels on the road, and their laughter and talk, and the music of the instruments they carried.
and when I turn in the bend in the road, where they too saw the towers of Canterbury, I feel I've only to turn my head, to see them on the road behind me" Powell & Pressburger - A Canterbury Tale

Deep in the castle and back from the wars Back with my lady and the fire burned tall Hoorah went the men down below All outside was the rain and the snow Hear their shouts, hear their roar They've probably all had a barrel or much, much more Hoorah, Hoorah, Hoorah, Yea Over the hill with the swords of a thousand men We had to meet the enemy a mile away Thunder in the air and the skies turned grey Assembling the knights and their swords were sharp There was a hope in our English hearts Hear our roar, hear our sound We're gonna fight until we have won this town Hoorah, Hoorah, Hoorah, Yea Over the hill with the swords of a thousand men

Here's one for you Soldo.
No matter where I roam I will return to my English rose For no bonds can ever tempt me from she I've sailed the seven seas, Flown the whole blue sky. But I've returned with haste to where my Love does lie. No matter where I go I will come back to my English Rose For nothing can ever tempt me from she. I've searched the secret mists - I've climbed the highest peaks Caught the wild wind home To hear her soft voice speak No matter where I roam I will return to my English Rose For no bonds can ever keep me from she. I've been to ancient worlds I've scoured the whole universe And caught the first train home To be at her side. No matter where I roam I will return to my English Rose For no bonds, nothing and no-one can ever keep me from she
